Styling 'Victoriana' for FLUR MAGAZINE

Fashion photographer Vikky Ivie and I collaborated on a hauntingly poetic editorial for FLUR MAGAZINE. Victoriana is inspired by a bygone era where decadence, class and power were the social currency of the time. Despite the editorials name, when sourcing clothes and accessories I took influences from various periods throughout british history; tudor, victorian and edwardian. It was important to me that the styling embodied all of these eras without focusing on one in particular. The gothic shadows and morbid allure that dominated the fashions of the time are captured through theatrical collars, ornate accessories and crushed velvets in bramble berry shades.

Other influences came from old fashioned aristocracy where an outfit was worn to symbolise the families status and wealth. Throughout history the rich were adorned in black clothing simply because it was the most expensive dye, reflecting opulence and grandeur.

As a stylist I try to bring together original, period clothing and antique jewellery with garments from recent collections. There is a beautiful harmony in playing with time and creating a look that is made up of different eras. I styled this editorial using antique pieces such as a 1920's crushed velvet purse with an accordion, gate-top, brass opening. Alongside vintage brooches and crystalline beads I used a top hat that dates back to the 1850's and is labelled 'Harman & Son. Late of 87 New Bond St. 65, Jermyn St, S.W. (One door from St James St)' There is something quite surreal about the fact a gentlemen purchased this hat in London during the victorian era, and yet 160 years later it is still being used as an expression of sophistication.

Romantic hair incases the models sullen expression whilst ruffles of lace and flickering gemstones are combined with elements of anglican worship and regal poise. Victoriana pays homage to the blackest fashion trends that were so prevalent through out western history. With appreciation for the eras ability to kindle enchanting beauty and style out of the darkest shadows.
